"Being Thankful" RESCUE RADIO with MarjorieCole

Having an attitude of gratitude and rejoicing fills our souls with hope and joy and changes our disposition to one of positivity. The bible encourages us to think on things that are lovely and of good report. (Phil. 4:8)   We are constantly surrounded by evil reports that breed fear and anxiety. Being thankful is a discipline that shifts our meditations onto things that not only create a healthier environment for those around us,  but also provides a powerful defense against things like anxiety and discouragement that try to overtake us.    We think we have to be happy to be thankful, when in fact, it is being thankful (in whatever state we find ourselves in) that makes us happy.   "Be anxious for nothing, but in everything, by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God, and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus." (Phil. 4:6-7)

00:00:24.579 --> 00:00:28.419
Rescue Radio, because there's a war for your soul.

00:00:28.879 --> 00:00:34.019
Yes, Father God, we thank you that the war has been won by you,

00:00:34.039 --> 00:00:35.639
and the enemy has been defeated.

00:00:35.999 --> 00:00:39.139
And we thank you, Lord God, that even from the foundation of the world,

00:00:39.219 --> 00:00:43.899
all of these things have been discussed and debated and settled because you

00:00:43.899 --> 00:00:47.239
settled it all when you died on the cross and rose from the dead,

00:00:47.399 --> 00:00:49.239
and Satan had nothing more he could say about it.

00:00:49.239 --> 00:00:54.739
So we thank you, Lord God, for your faithfulness to complete the work you've begun in us.

00:00:54.819 --> 00:00:57.639
We thank you for the opportunity to be thankful, to recognize,

00:00:57.939 --> 00:01:03.739
to return the gratitude to you and the kindness that you did in creating us in your own image.

00:01:03.899 --> 00:01:08.139
So God, give us grateful hearts and give us eyes that see and ears that hear

00:01:08.139 --> 00:01:12.879
and appreciate the blessings that you have given us throughout our lives.

00:01:12.979 --> 00:01:18.899
And may that bring joy and glory and praise to your name as well.

00:01:18.899 --> 00:01:23.759
And we bind every spirit that would try to hinder or block the revelation,

00:01:24.319 --> 00:01:27.999
the understanding of this truth, Father, to our hearts and minds.

00:01:28.039 --> 00:01:29.619
Give us eyes to see and ears to hear.

00:01:29.919 --> 00:01:32.059
Father, we ask these things in Jesus' name. Amen.

00:01:32.659 --> 00:01:36.159
Amen and amen and amen. So what do you suppose we're talking about today?

00:01:36.759 --> 00:01:40.779
Let me think about it for a minute. How about Thanksgiving? Yes, indeed.

00:01:41.039 --> 00:01:46.459
You know, Thanksgiving is kind of that day, you know, sandwiched between Halloween

00:01:46.459 --> 00:01:52.039
and Christmas. Yeah, that nobody remembers anyway. That people just kind of pass right over.

00:01:52.359 --> 00:01:54.359
We're just jumping for the...

00:01:54.691 --> 00:01:58.891
Black Friday sales. Black Friday starts probably in— It's probably more important

00:01:58.891 --> 00:02:00.311
than Thanksgiving. It starts in October almost.

00:02:00.731 --> 00:02:03.611
But again, this is the way it goes.

00:02:03.611 --> 00:02:08.971
The whole idea of Thanksgiving and being grateful and counting your blessings

00:02:08.971 --> 00:02:13.531
and having a sweet attitude and believing God for things is kind of being pushed

00:02:13.531 --> 00:02:16.311
out of the limelight by the gory,

00:02:16.771 --> 00:02:20.311
gross, creepy things we think about and prepare for Halloween.

00:02:20.411 --> 00:02:23.511
And then, of course, the delightful things we think about with Christmas.

00:02:23.511 --> 00:02:28.931
So, Halloween, I mean, Thanksgiving has just kind of lost its place.

00:02:29.071 --> 00:02:33.791
Yeah, and the thing is, there's so much that we could be grumbling about and complaining about.

00:02:34.051 --> 00:02:38.271
Yeah. But, you know, in a lot of conversations, what do we hear?

00:02:38.511 --> 00:02:42.751
We hear complaining, this is wrong, you know, economy's bad,

00:02:42.891 --> 00:02:44.451
this is bad, this is going on.

00:02:44.631 --> 00:02:48.271
We recognize that we're living in very evil days.

00:02:48.891 --> 00:02:54.931
But at the same time that there's an old kid's song called Home on the Range,

00:02:55.191 --> 00:03:00.311
where the deer on the antelope play, where seldom is heard a discouraging word

00:03:00.311 --> 00:03:02.691
and the skies are not cloudy all day.

00:03:03.091 --> 00:03:09.491
But there's so many discouraging words around and complaint.

00:03:09.791 --> 00:03:13.831
But listen, Thanksgiving is so important.

00:03:14.651 --> 00:03:19.331
Let's get the scripture setting for this. 1 Thessalonians 5.18,

00:03:20.159 --> 00:03:26.059
In everything, give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for

00:03:26.059 --> 00:03:27.879
you. In everything, give thanks.

00:03:29.459 --> 00:03:34.419
Philippians is a lot like that. Philippians says, well, starting with chapter

00:03:34.419 --> 00:03:40.219
4, verse 1, verse 4, Rejoice in the Lord always.

00:03:40.479 --> 00:03:42.359
And again, I say, rejoice.

00:03:42.839 --> 00:03:45.939
Let your gentleness be known to all men.

00:03:46.059 --> 00:03:50.139
The Lord is at hand. So, as we're preparing for the return of Jesus Christ,

00:03:50.299 --> 00:03:51.779
it's coming again. What does he say to do?

00:03:52.039 --> 00:03:54.419
He says, rejoice. He says, look up.

00:03:54.679 --> 00:03:57.459
He says, in everything, give thanks.

00:03:58.159 --> 00:04:02.899
He says, the Lord is at hand. He says, be anxious for nothing,

00:04:03.159 --> 00:04:06.559
but in everything, by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving,

00:04:07.119 --> 00:04:08.719
that you request to be known to God.

00:04:08.819 --> 00:04:13.379
So, thanksgiving is an antidote for anxiety.

00:04:13.719 --> 00:04:16.879
Another thing is that— People get anxious because they don't,

00:04:16.979 --> 00:04:20.619
they're worried, they take on the concerns, the worries, the fears,

00:04:20.799 --> 00:04:23.799
and they meditate on those things. But he says, be anxious for nothing.

00:04:23.999 --> 00:04:29.959
So when you have cast your cares upon the Lord, part of that prayer and casting

00:04:29.959 --> 00:04:34.919
our worries upon the Lord is operating out of rejoicing and thanksgiving.

00:04:34.919 --> 00:04:38.619
And so when you do that, and you cast your cares upon the Lord,

00:04:38.699 --> 00:04:43.759
then it says the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding,

00:04:44.219 --> 00:04:46.319
will guard your heart and mind through Christ Jesus.

00:04:47.085 --> 00:04:49.685
And then he goes on to say, well, don't you want the peace of God?

00:04:49.825 --> 00:04:51.545
Isn't that what everybody's after, is peace?

00:04:51.765 --> 00:04:56.025
Well, the peace comes from thanksgiving, from an attitude of gratitude and from

00:04:56.025 --> 00:04:58.205
allowing the Lord to carry your worries.

00:04:58.325 --> 00:05:03.685
And then he says in verse 8, Therefore, brethren, think on whatsoever things

00:05:03.685 --> 00:05:07.965
are noble, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure,

00:05:08.145 --> 00:05:10.425
whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things have good report.

00:05:10.625 --> 00:05:15.925
If there is any virtue, if there's anything praiseworthy, meditate on these things.

00:05:16.325 --> 00:05:20.645
And he says, And the things which you have learned and received and heard and

00:05:20.645 --> 00:05:23.285
saw in me, these do, and the God of peace will be with you.

00:05:23.425 --> 00:05:27.185
I think a lot of times we don't think that being grateful or thanking.

00:05:28.125 --> 00:05:32.245
Being thankful or rejoicing, I don't think we think of those as very spiritual things.

00:05:32.405 --> 00:05:36.885
I think we think of those as kind of like frills on top or something,

00:05:37.025 --> 00:05:41.505
that they're not the basic bedrock of what our relationship with God or others should be.

00:05:41.625 --> 00:05:44.125
But really, bottom line, that's what it is.

00:05:44.705 --> 00:05:49.285
Thanksgiving, spreading the gospel, the good news, keeping people from losing heart,

00:05:49.865 --> 00:05:55.465
giving up, is when you're really meditating on the goodness of God and the faithfulness

00:05:55.465 --> 00:05:58.885
of God and being thankful for it, then discouragement, anxiety,

00:05:59.085 --> 00:06:03.905
fear kind of melt away, and we don't become, we don't fall into that one trap,

00:06:04.125 --> 00:06:08.725
that category that 2 Timothy is talking about, chapter 3, where he says,

00:06:08.945 --> 00:06:13.965
but know this, that in the last days, are we in the last days? Yes, absolutely.

00:06:14.165 --> 00:06:17.245
The last of the last of the last of the last days. Well, when we're in these

00:06:17.245 --> 00:06:19.125
last days, perilous times will come.

00:06:19.245 --> 00:06:23.425
Well, what's going to be, what's dangerous? What is he defining as dangerous?

00:06:23.865 --> 00:06:27.865
Our men will be, number one, lovers of themselves. That's true.

00:06:28.657 --> 00:06:35.917
Egocentric, ego-statistical, opinionated, selfish, lovers of money,

00:06:36.777 --> 00:06:42.717
boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful.

00:06:44.077 --> 00:06:48.997
That's next to unholy. And I think it's placed rightly because when you're not

00:06:48.997 --> 00:06:50.537
thankful, you're not going to be holy.

00:06:50.657 --> 00:06:52.957
You're not going to appreciate that which is pure, lovely, just,

00:06:53.057 --> 00:06:54.157
and holy before the Lord.

00:06:54.617 --> 00:06:59.637
You're going to be looking for ways to strive, and there's going to be the bitterness,

00:06:59.817 --> 00:07:04.497
the unforgiveness, the slandering, all of these things that are contrary to thankful.

00:07:04.697 --> 00:07:09.957
So, when our hearts are not thankful, then the enemy can get in to bring bitterness.

00:07:10.597 --> 00:07:13.717
Grumbling, complaining, negativity.

00:07:14.157 --> 00:07:18.637
All those things will take the place or fill up the place that thankful and

00:07:18.637 --> 00:07:21.757
rejoicing should be holding in positions in our heart.

00:07:21.757 --> 00:07:26.217
Yeah, and just in normal relationships with people, you know,

00:07:26.317 --> 00:07:29.397
isn't it pleasant to be around people that are appreciative?

00:07:29.877 --> 00:07:36.557
Sometimes you can, you know, we do good things for other people to help them,

00:07:36.697 --> 00:07:38.277
to encourage them and stuff like that.

00:07:38.537 --> 00:07:45.657
Sometimes they don't, we don't do it to get their accolades of appreciation.

00:07:46.077 --> 00:07:50.137
We do it because it's the right thing. But how much more pleasant,

00:07:50.277 --> 00:07:55.077
and you think in your own life, isn't it more enjoyable to be around people

00:07:55.077 --> 00:07:58.197
that are appreciative, they're thankful?

00:07:58.617 --> 00:08:04.337
You know, they're thankful for you. They're thankful for just every good thing.

00:08:04.577 --> 00:08:09.797
I mean, thankful that your body's working as good as it is. Maybe it's not working

00:08:09.797 --> 00:08:14.577
perfect in every way, but be thankful for the air that we breathe,

00:08:14.717 --> 00:08:18.537
the food that we eat, the friends that we have.

00:08:18.717 --> 00:08:22.217
And Paul was talking to the church at Ephesus.

00:08:22.878 --> 00:08:31.758
And he says to them in Ephesians 1.16, he says, oh, he starts with verse, let's look at verse 15.

00:08:32.078 --> 00:08:36.858
Therefore, I also, after I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and

00:08:36.858 --> 00:08:41.158
your love for all the saints, do not cease to give thanks for you,

00:08:41.658 --> 00:08:44.038
making mention of you in my prayers.

00:08:44.038 --> 00:08:53.058
So he's constantly living with an attitude of thanksgiving for these believers.

00:08:53.258 --> 00:08:56.978
Now, are we thankful for our brothers and sisters in Christ?

00:08:57.118 --> 00:09:02.998
Are we thankful for them, even the ones that are kind of weird like we are?

00:09:03.218 --> 00:09:09.018
But anyway— Well, actually— And thankful for members of your family.

00:09:09.018 --> 00:09:15.338
I mean, maybe you don't have the most ideal family, but just think about now,

00:09:15.498 --> 00:09:17.258
where is your heart on all this?

00:09:17.518 --> 00:09:23.258
Because every good gift, James says, every good gift and every perfect gift is from above.

00:09:23.538 --> 00:09:26.878
Now, the Lord is the source of everything good.

00:09:27.560 --> 00:09:34.280
And why not express appreciation to Him for this? Because it's all really come

00:09:34.280 --> 00:09:37.820
from Him and through Him to us, to benefit us.

00:09:38.000 --> 00:09:43.720
Yeah, I think thankfulness or thanksgiving is a thing that we need to really focus on.

00:09:43.780 --> 00:09:46.400
I believe once you're—the Bible says, in everything, give thanks.

00:09:46.660 --> 00:09:49.600
In everything, give thanks. And it says rejoice.

00:09:49.960 --> 00:09:52.880
And again, I say rejoice. So two of the things that we can do,

00:09:52.900 --> 00:09:57.400
even in the midst of difficult trials, and it's probably the most powerful thing

00:09:57.400 --> 00:09:59.780
we can do is actually stop and give thanks to God.

00:10:00.260 --> 00:10:03.200
And in your giving that thanks, you're saying, Lord, I trust you, I believe you.

00:10:03.380 --> 00:10:06.800
You can work all things together for good. I'm not gonna go with what this looks

00:10:06.800 --> 00:10:09.780
like right now. I'm not gonna go with what this feels like right now.

00:10:10.000 --> 00:10:14.520
I'm gonna go, I'm gonna look at you and say that you are faithful and that you're

00:10:14.520 --> 00:10:19.920
able to work all things together for good and bring beauty out of these ashes.

00:10:20.320 --> 00:10:28.080
And so that's what we want the Lord to know, to see from us that rejoicing, that is an act of faith.

00:10:28.260 --> 00:10:32.520
You're not going by your feelings at that point. You're going by an act of faith and obedience.

00:10:32.620 --> 00:10:35.600
You're not going by sight or feelings, but by faith when you're just saying,

00:10:35.700 --> 00:10:38.220
no matter what this looks like, I'm going to trust God.

00:10:38.320 --> 00:10:42.240
In the whole, all of the Psalms, not much of the prayers are,

00:10:42.400 --> 00:10:44.280
oh, give thanks to the Lord for he's good.

00:10:44.600 --> 00:10:46.800
Offer the sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving.

00:10:48.200 --> 00:10:51.880
Make your requests made known to God. Oh, give thanks to the Lord for he's good.

00:10:52.000 --> 00:10:53.360
His steadfast love endures forever.

00:10:53.800 --> 00:10:58.080
Give thanks to the Lord for, again, these are repeated many times, for why?

00:10:58.240 --> 00:11:03.020
Because his steadfast love endures beyond the fear, the pain,

00:11:03.280 --> 00:11:07.540
the loss, even the place where you get desolate and you give up, the.

00:11:09.126 --> 00:11:14.666
Abiding love and power of God's faithfulness endures to carry you through this difficult time.

00:11:14.766 --> 00:11:18.786
But the most important thing is for you to continue to demonstrate your faith

00:11:18.786 --> 00:11:19.826
in the faithfulness of God.

00:11:19.946 --> 00:11:25.286
And by being thankful, you're going to basically stamp on the devil's head and

00:11:25.286 --> 00:11:26.326
say, I don't care what it looks like.

00:11:26.406 --> 00:11:28.866
I don't care what it feels like. I am thankful. God is with me.

00:11:28.946 --> 00:11:30.166
God is good. God is faithful.

00:11:30.366 --> 00:11:35.066
And I rejoice because a joyful heart, for one thing, is good medicine.

00:11:35.886 --> 00:11:39.266
But so, you know, I'll give thanks to the Lord, call upon his name,

00:11:39.406 --> 00:11:41.626
make known his deeds among the people, proclaim.

00:11:41.786 --> 00:11:47.326
This is our whole mandate is that the peace of God rule in your heart and to

00:11:47.326 --> 00:11:49.706
the which you are also called in one body and be thankful.

00:11:50.126 --> 00:11:54.286
All of these things are simple admonitions and they're not that hard to do.

00:11:54.366 --> 00:11:55.806
They don't cost you any money.

00:11:55.966 --> 00:12:00.606
You don't have to go out and you have a bag full of money to buy some gratitude and thankfulness.

00:12:00.606 --> 00:12:03.306
It's just a put you just decide in your heart you're going

00:12:03.306 --> 00:12:06.926
to replace that that grumbling that murmuring that negativity that

00:12:06.926 --> 00:12:12.126
criticism with an attitude of blessing god and thanking god and you will see

00:12:12.126 --> 00:12:17.626
how your whole body soul and spirit will feel better yeah i i just think of

00:12:17.626 --> 00:12:22.306
the days when i was in bible college and our president our president was not

00:12:22.306 --> 00:12:25.866
always in chapel every morning but he would,

00:12:26.669 --> 00:12:32.609
Whenever he was there, he'd have a stand-up, and we recited Psalm 100.

00:12:34.169 --> 00:12:37.369
And in Psalm 100, and a lot of us are familiar with that, it says,

00:12:37.529 --> 00:12:41.649
Make a joyful shout unto the Lord, all you land.

00:12:41.769 --> 00:12:44.769
Serve the Lord with gladness. Come before his presence with singing.

00:12:45.149 --> 00:12:49.909
Know that the Lord, he is God. It is he who has made us, and not we ourselves.

00:12:50.309 --> 00:12:53.169
We are his people and the sheep of his pasture.

00:12:53.889 --> 00:12:58.249
Enter into his gates with thanksgiving and into his courts with praise.

00:12:58.449 --> 00:13:01.789
Be thankful to him and bless his name.

00:13:02.029 --> 00:13:09.489
For the Lord is good, his mercy is everlasting, and his truth endures to all generations.

00:13:09.829 --> 00:13:14.189
So, I mean, that was something that just got in our spirit.

00:13:14.409 --> 00:13:19.249
Our spirits every time we share that because he knew.

00:13:19.449 --> 00:13:25.009
The word. He knew this because he knew the power of the Word to get that in

00:13:25.009 --> 00:13:30.829
us so we would just, every day, we'd be reminded to be thankful to the Lord. It is so much easier.

00:13:31.029 --> 00:13:34.649
It's really easy to grumble and complain. But really grumbling and complaining,

00:13:34.849 --> 00:13:39.349
the fruit of that is not anything pleasant or anything you really want to have in your life.

00:13:39.509 --> 00:13:43.829
So the opposite of grumbling and complaining is gratitude and thanksgiving.

00:13:43.829 --> 00:13:49.689
He says in Isaiah 12, 4, he says, I say to you this day, give thanks to the

00:13:49.689 --> 00:13:54.569
Lord, call upon his name, make known his deeds among the people, proclaim this.

00:13:56.319 --> 00:13:59.539
Among the people, they mention that his name is exalted.

00:13:59.819 --> 00:14:04.639
Sing to the Lord, give praise. So when we're praising God, we're not complaining.

00:14:04.919 --> 00:14:08.779
When we're thanking God, we're giving place to that gratitude.

00:14:09.039 --> 00:14:13.279
We're lifting up our faith. Actually, I think, like I said earlier,

00:14:13.519 --> 00:14:17.519
faith is demonstrated by our thanksgiving and by our rejoicing.

00:14:17.739 --> 00:14:23.519
He says, let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts to the which also you were called.

00:14:23.599 --> 00:14:27.819
We're called to be in that place of peace in one body and be thankful.

00:14:27.819 --> 00:14:30.999
Again, that knits our hearts together with gratitude.

00:14:31.199 --> 00:14:36.359
And this very healthy, Thanksgiving is a super healthy way to live.

00:14:36.759 --> 00:14:41.639
So ingratitude, really, Marjorie, is a doorway to idolatry.

00:14:41.959 --> 00:14:45.839
Right, because you're dissatisfied, you're not happy. It's a doorway to idolatry

00:14:45.839 --> 00:14:47.639
and depravity. And doing it yourself.

00:14:48.339 --> 00:14:55.959
Because in Romans chapter one, And it says, let's see here, verse 21,

00:14:56.119 --> 00:15:01.879
because although they knew God, they did not glorify him as God.

00:15:02.479 --> 00:15:06.579
Okay, there was a recognition of God, but what did they do? They refused.

00:15:06.999 --> 00:15:11.719
They took him for granted, you know, at least minimally they took him for granted.

00:15:11.979 --> 00:15:17.019
And pretty soon they're turning away from him totally, nor were thankful. Yeah.

00:15:17.478 --> 00:15:21.738
But what was the result of that? They became futile in their thoughts,

00:15:21.878 --> 00:15:23.998
and their foolish hearts were darkened.

00:15:24.138 --> 00:15:26.238
Professing to be wise, they became fools.

00:15:26.438 --> 00:15:29.958
But it all started out when they were refused to glorify God and be thankful.

00:15:30.518 --> 00:15:36.558
They were, you know— Ingratitude is, like I said, is the open door to idolatry

00:15:36.558 --> 00:15:40.418
and all kinds of— Because in idolatry, what you're saying is,

00:15:40.518 --> 00:15:42.738
I'm not satisfied with what God is providing for me.

00:15:43.058 --> 00:15:47.138
I'm going to go another way to get what I want. I'm going to go to his enemy. me.

00:15:47.258 --> 00:15:51.318
I'm going to go to the other side and see what the devil's got for me.

00:15:51.418 --> 00:15:56.518
So you're really seeking to the favor of the demonic spirits or the idol,

00:15:56.738 --> 00:16:00.358
the gods, if you will, that will give you what you want.

00:16:00.418 --> 00:16:04.178
And they will give you what you want for a minute, and then they're going to bind you.

00:16:04.478 --> 00:16:10.058
So it says, although they knew God, they did not glorify him as God,

00:16:10.118 --> 00:16:14.738
nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened.

00:16:14.798 --> 00:16:20.578
This is exactly what Ingratitude, you know, entitlement, all of these things

00:16:20.578 --> 00:16:26.278
push the envelope for us to become ungrateful to God and therefore deceived

00:16:26.278 --> 00:16:28.098
and, like you even said, idolatry.

00:16:28.098 --> 00:16:32.278
Yeah, and it gets—then when there's idolatry, there's immorality,

00:16:32.458 --> 00:16:37.838
there's sexual perversion, there's all kinds of perversion, vile passions—.

00:16:38.867 --> 00:16:43.867
You know, homosexuality, people burning in their lust for one another.

00:16:43.887 --> 00:16:47.747
Well, all of this, that comes out of ungratefulness.

00:16:47.847 --> 00:16:51.527
A debased mind is the result of ingratitude.

00:16:51.567 --> 00:16:55.487
Because thanksgiving focuses on God, thanking Him for making you,

00:16:55.647 --> 00:16:58.267
for being, abiding, providing, all those things.

00:16:58.367 --> 00:17:03.307
And when you don't want to give God that thanks, then what are you doing? You're rebelling.

00:17:03.547 --> 00:17:08.307
You're rejecting Him. And, you know, he says in Colossians, And that the peace

00:17:08.307 --> 00:17:12.927
of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called, and be thankful.

00:17:13.047 --> 00:17:16.907
Then he says, Do everything that you do in word or deed. Do everything in the

00:17:16.907 --> 00:17:20.767
name of the Lord Jesus Christ, giving thanks to God and the Father through him.

00:17:21.067 --> 00:17:23.647
Give thanks in all circumstances, 1 Thessalonians.

00:17:24.347 --> 00:17:28.467
But this is the will of God in Christ Jesus.

00:17:28.467 --> 00:17:34.627
So God's will is tied up with our ability to walk in—His will is for us as peace,

00:17:34.667 --> 00:17:43.047
but the ability to walk in that peace comes through being thankful in everything and trusting God.

00:17:43.167 --> 00:17:46.827
Really, when you're saying, thank you, God, you're actually acknowledging Him

00:17:46.827 --> 00:17:50.347
as your source, as your protector, as your supplier.

00:17:50.587 --> 00:17:54.447
You're really giving God the glory that's due His name.

00:17:55.007 --> 00:17:58.027
And the devil, of course, doesn't like any of that. So he wants you to do the

00:17:58.027 --> 00:18:01.587
opposite of that, which is grumble and complain and count your,

00:18:02.167 --> 00:18:07.927
not count your blessings, but count your miseries and line them all up and then

00:18:07.927 --> 00:18:11.467
blame God for whatever he's not doing right in your life.

00:18:11.587 --> 00:18:17.587
However, an attitude of gratitude, thankfulness, trusting in the faith of God

00:18:17.587 --> 00:18:21.107
to finish the work he's beginning, these are the ways to stay healthy.

00:18:21.547 --> 00:18:26.767
And these are the ways to bring us to wisdom and peace and gratefulness.

00:18:26.907 --> 00:18:32.627
And there's that old song, Count Your Blessings. Yeah. Name them one by one.

00:18:33.250 --> 00:18:37.850
Count your many blessings. See what God has done. So sometimes we just,

00:18:37.990 --> 00:18:41.170
we worry about the things that we don't have.

00:18:41.630 --> 00:18:46.270
Or we desire, we worry about the things that we don't have, and then we set

00:18:46.270 --> 00:18:50.650
our sights on getting some more stuff or whatever it is. Thinking that the stuff

00:18:50.650 --> 00:18:51.910
will make us happy. Yeah.

00:18:52.210 --> 00:18:56.810
And so. So then you have to get another storage shed. Count your, yeah, blessing. Oh.

00:18:57.150 --> 00:19:02.190
And then I've got more stuff that controls me. Oh, yeah. But counting your blessings.

00:19:02.470 --> 00:19:06.130
Never enough. The thing is, we're blessed in so many ways.

00:19:06.330 --> 00:19:13.570
You know, sometimes we refer to, you know, very super wealthy people as being blessed.

00:19:14.290 --> 00:19:17.530
Well, they are. I mean, if they've honored God, they're blessed.

00:19:17.770 --> 00:19:23.010
But what about if you're just, you know, almost dirt poor right now?

00:19:23.590 --> 00:19:27.450
You're still blessed. There's still something to be thankful for.

00:19:27.450 --> 00:19:33.070
Yeah, but what about if we're not counting our blessings, and we're then open

00:19:33.070 --> 00:19:38.630
up to all this misery and stuff that the enemy wants to pound into us?

00:19:38.790 --> 00:19:42.910
But God says, you know, count it all joy when you fall into various trials,

00:19:42.990 --> 00:19:47.450
because that brings the perfection of your faith, and part of that is thankfulness.

00:19:48.170 --> 00:19:51.490
And, you know, another thing is, we don't seem to be thankful for something

00:19:51.490 --> 00:19:56.310
until we don't have it. You know, we take for granted our eyesight,

00:19:56.570 --> 00:20:00.230
our ears, our hearing, our walking, our mobility, our ability to bend down and

00:20:00.230 --> 00:20:02.470
pick a piece of paper up off the floor, put on our socks.

00:20:02.650 --> 00:20:07.190
We take those things for granted because, well, they just should be there because

00:20:07.190 --> 00:20:08.310
they've always been there.

00:20:08.410 --> 00:20:12.890
But we don't really miss something until we don't have it anymore.

00:20:12.890 --> 00:20:18.330
And then we cry out for the thing that we had and we're not even thankful for

00:20:18.330 --> 00:20:24.110
when we had it. Yeah, there's an old saying that you don't miss the water until the well runs dry.

00:20:24.550 --> 00:20:30.110
You know, so that's, you know, so...

00:20:30.711 --> 00:20:36.051
Yeah, and how many times do we take people in our lives for granted? For granted, that too.

00:20:36.131 --> 00:20:38.831
You know, it's like, well, we just assume they're going to be there,

00:20:38.871 --> 00:20:44.271
and then maybe a death comes, maybe suddenly or something of some loved one,

00:20:44.331 --> 00:20:46.331
and we realize, oh, my goodness.

00:20:46.491 --> 00:20:49.591
I've taken them for granted. I should have, I could have, if only I would have

00:20:49.591 --> 00:20:54.291
known. If only, you know, if only we would have been more attentive to them,

00:20:54.291 --> 00:21:00.831
showed appreciation to them, respected to them, being kind and forgiving toward them.

00:21:01.427 --> 00:21:06.107
This is so important. Taking stuff for granted.

00:21:06.287 --> 00:21:09.827
Taking people for granted, yeah. Taking people for granted, stuff for granted,

00:21:09.987 --> 00:21:15.187
taking the sky for granted, taking the trees for granted, taking the flowers

00:21:15.187 --> 00:21:18.507
for granted, taking your children, your family,

00:21:18.807 --> 00:21:21.607
your spouse for granted. Well, yeah.

00:21:21.767 --> 00:21:26.867
Don't do it. Be thankful for them. Well, and don't let it be that you haven't—don't

00:21:26.867 --> 00:21:28.687
be thankful until they're taken away.

00:21:28.687 --> 00:21:32.327
Another thing in 2 Corinthians, he talks about in chapter 4,

00:21:32.807 --> 00:21:37.847
therefore, since we have this ministry, let us receive mercy so that we do not lose heart.

00:21:37.947 --> 00:21:42.947
I believe being thankful is a way to stay in the game, stay confident,

00:21:43.147 --> 00:21:45.487
powerful, anointed, declaring the truth,

00:21:46.047 --> 00:21:51.267
not allowing discouragement or shame or defeat to take over your life,

00:21:51.287 --> 00:21:54.667
because you keep declaring the goodness of God.

00:21:54.667 --> 00:22:03.027
He says, And then he talks about if your gospel is hid, veiled from people.

00:22:03.627 --> 00:22:08.647
It's veiled to those who are perishing with the minds, the God of this world has blinded.

00:22:08.947 --> 00:22:12.467
For we do not preach ourselves. We do not become arrogant.

00:22:12.747 --> 00:22:17.247
We preach Christ, ourselves, as servants. And God says, he commands the light

00:22:17.247 --> 00:22:18.247
to shine in the darkness.

00:22:18.407 --> 00:22:22.087
He commands the light to be given to our heart. That light comes as an attitude

00:22:22.087 --> 00:22:24.147
of a spirit of thanksgiving.

00:22:24.667 --> 00:22:29.507
And he says, even though we're hard-pressed on every side, yet we're not crushed.

00:22:29.627 --> 00:22:32.767
Why? Because, and we're perplexed, but not in despair. Why?

00:22:33.547 --> 00:22:36.587
Persecuted, but not forsaken. Struck down, but not destroyed. Why?

00:22:37.027 --> 00:22:40.167
Always caring about in our bodies the death of the Lord Jesus Christ,

00:22:40.187 --> 00:22:43.347
that we might also be manifested in his life.

00:22:43.667 --> 00:22:47.247
Why? Why is it that he says, don't lose heart? Therefore, we do not lose heart.

00:22:47.667 --> 00:22:51.607
Even though our outward man is getting old and perishing, yet the inward man

00:22:51.607 --> 00:22:55.667
is being renewed day by day. So the inward man is being renewed by the spirit of thanksgiving.

00:22:55.967 --> 00:22:59.327
Our light affliction is but for a moment. It's only momentary.

00:22:59.787 --> 00:23:03.467
It's working in us a far more exceeding eternal weight of glory.

00:23:04.065 --> 00:23:06.565
For he says, we do not look at the things which are seen, but the things which

00:23:06.565 --> 00:23:10.005
are not seen, for the things which are seen are temporary, and the things which

00:23:10.005 --> 00:23:11.025
are not seen are eternal.

00:23:11.265 --> 00:23:16.645
Well, thanksgiving is a thing that bridges the gap between now and eternity.

00:23:16.885 --> 00:23:22.925
It is the thing that declares our dignity, our confidence, our faith.

00:23:23.225 --> 00:23:27.985
It validates our authenticity as a true follower of Jesus Christ,

00:23:28.145 --> 00:23:33.185
because many of those followers had many things crushed, as Paul is talking

00:23:33.185 --> 00:23:38.085
about here, persecuted, forsaken, not destroyed.

00:23:38.905 --> 00:23:42.645
Always working through and walking through these difficulties,

00:23:42.865 --> 00:23:48.605
but not defeated because the enemy has not been able to steal or take away our

00:23:48.605 --> 00:23:52.385
confidence in the goodness of God. And that's what Thanksgiving is.

00:23:52.585 --> 00:23:57.705
It's being able to stand and having done all, to stand knowing that God is good,

00:23:57.805 --> 00:24:00.085
God is for us, and God will never leave us or forsake us.

00:24:00.165 --> 00:24:03.645
So we're trusting that this Thanksgiving, two days from today,

00:24:03.925 --> 00:24:11.805
will be an awesome day for you to practice on perfecting that attitude of gratitude to glorify God,

00:24:12.145 --> 00:24:15.825
to put Him back in His right place in your life, in your mind,

00:24:15.945 --> 00:24:21.305
and be thankful, do the will of God, and bless His holy name.

00:24:21.505 --> 00:24:26.605
So may that be our prayer, and that may be our challenge and our endeavor in

00:24:26.605 --> 00:24:29.465
these next—right now, take up the challenge.

00:24:29.685 --> 00:24:34.145
Yeah, take up the challenge. And Psalm 136, O give thanks to the Lord,

00:24:34.145 --> 00:24:37.385
for he is good, for his mercy endures forever.

00:24:37.605 --> 00:24:42.665
O give thanks to the God of gods, for his mercy endures forever.

00:24:42.765 --> 00:24:47.985
O give thanks to the Lord of lords, for his mercy endures forever. This is a command.

00:24:48.185 --> 00:24:53.665
And I want to just read this. The setting of this is David wrote a psalm when

00:24:53.665 --> 00:24:58.725
he placed the Ark of the Covenant in the Old Testament tabernacle.

00:24:58.985 --> 00:25:04.245
He wrote a psalm for the occasion in 1 Chronicles 16.

00:25:05.785 --> 00:25:10.105
Verse 8, and I'm just going to read some of the aspects of this song.

00:25:10.505 --> 00:25:14.265
He says, Oh, give thanks to the Lord. Call upon his name.

00:25:14.585 --> 00:25:19.365
Make known his deeds among the people. Sing to him. Sing psalms to him.

00:25:19.685 --> 00:25:21.805
Talk of all his wondrous works.

00:25:22.365 --> 00:25:27.745
Glory in his holy name. Let the hearts of those rejoice who seek the Lord.

00:25:28.225 --> 00:25:32.785
Seek the Lord in his strength. Seek his face forevermore.

00:25:33.494 --> 00:25:39.694
Remember his marvelous works, which he has done, his wonders and the judgments of his mouth.

00:25:40.034 --> 00:25:44.334
And there's joy with thanksgiving, you know.

00:25:44.574 --> 00:25:49.454
He says, let the heavens rejoice, verse 31.

00:25:49.834 --> 00:25:55.654
Let the earth be glad and let them say among the nations, the Lord reigns.

00:25:55.834 --> 00:26:01.274
The Lord is God. He reigns. And so let that be the theme of your heart from

00:26:01.274 --> 00:26:05.794
here to the end of the year. Let us just thank God and rejoice in everything.

00:26:05.974 --> 00:26:07.254
This will give you victory.

00:26:07.494 --> 00:26:11.354
Believe it or not, when you start to, in everything, give thanks and rejoice,

00:26:11.494 --> 00:26:16.974
and again I say rejoice, when you do those two things, you will see changes in your circumstances.

00:26:17.194 --> 00:26:21.534
You will see things turn around. You will see the devil defeated because you

00:26:21.534 --> 00:26:25.994
will see your faith rise and that God is faithful to complete his work in us.

00:26:26.094 --> 00:26:33.914
And thanksgiving is coupled with joy in your life. the joy and gratitude go together.

00:26:34.054 --> 00:26:38.694
And the more thankful you are, the more joy you have, and you'll be a lot more

00:26:38.694 --> 00:26:40.434
pleasant to be around. Amen.

00:26:40.714 --> 00:26:43.934
People will love to be around you. So, Father, we thank you.

00:26:43.934 --> 00:26:45.614
Thank you, Jesus, for Thanksgiving.

00:26:45.894 --> 00:26:49.234
We thank you for this opportunity to remember and recall to my many,

00:26:49.314 --> 00:26:50.754
many things that you are grateful.

00:26:51.514 --> 00:26:55.894
You have granted us and we are grateful for. Lord God, be blessed.

00:26:56.034 --> 00:27:01.534
We bless you now in your kindness to us, causing us to be showered with blessings

00:27:01.534 --> 00:27:05.254
and food and good things and being able to even to bless others.

00:27:05.414 --> 00:27:10.194
So, Father God, may you lift up our hearts and teach us how to walk in the courage

00:27:10.194 --> 00:27:13.874
of being grateful and thankful. In Jesus' name.

00:27:14.374 --> 00:27:18.614
Amen. You've got a book called Doing Relationships God's Way, Marjorie.

00:27:18.894 --> 00:27:24.414
There's a lot in there about, you know, because pretty much everything of life is relationships.

00:27:24.694 --> 00:27:28.234
Right. But being, I think there's parts in there about.

00:27:29.101 --> 00:27:32.341
You know, being grateful for the people that are in our lives.

00:27:32.441 --> 00:27:34.521
Tell us a little bit about that. Well, you know what?

00:27:34.661 --> 00:27:38.621
Again, just what we've already said, being grateful, thankful for the people

00:27:38.621 --> 00:27:42.481
in your world, in your life, treating them like sons and daughters of the Most

00:27:42.481 --> 00:27:46.541
High God, treating them like brothers and sisters, forgiving them when they mess up.

00:27:46.741 --> 00:27:50.721
And so doing relationships God's way is doing relationships like Jesus does them.

00:27:50.941 --> 00:27:55.461
And so we encourage you. That's on liferecovery.com. I think you can also get it on Amazon.

00:27:55.781 --> 00:27:58.921
So be encouraged, be thankful, and we bless God.

00:27:59.101 --> 00:28:05.041
For being able to speak with you, to encourage and enjoy our relationship together

00:28:05.041 --> 00:28:06.621
in conversations with God.

00:28:06.801 --> 00:28:09.581
Make every day a Thanksgiving day.
